Dusky Sound creature

A newspaper article in 1831 had an article about an unusual animal in the remote Dusky Sound on Southwestern South Island in New Zealand. Though this nearly two-century-old article being the only source for this cryptid makes it unlikely to exist, the cryptid is quite enthralling. 
A group of sailors from Sydney were boating in a cove at Dusky Sound when they saw a strange animal resembling a kangaroo foraging branches. It was bipedal, stood on its hind legs, the lower part of its body curved into a thick pointed tail and had a rabbit-like face. They estimate it was a massive 25 feet in length. After watching the animal for a couple of minutes, it noticed them and quickly hopped away into a shallow area of the sound and left their sight.
